About
A bit about Elizabeth
Elizabeth enjoys running, bush walking, adventure sports and travelling – anything that includes the outdoors really! She has been bungy jumping in China and New Zealand, white water rafting and trekking on active volcanoes in Indonesia, swimming with sharks in Fiji, scuba diving in Africa, tomb-raiding in Cambodia, and parasailing in the Philippines.
Biography
Elizabeth grew up on an isolated sheep and wheat station in rural ‘outback’ South Australia – the driest state in the driest continent in the world– and completed her final high school year subjects via school of the air. During this time she picked up the unique skills of a rouseabout and learned to throw a fleece and keep up with the fastest of Murray Mallee shearers.
Elizabeth has a passion for travel, learning languages, loves submerging herself among other cultures, and has lived and worked in Australia, PNG, China, Kenya and Indonesia. One of her favourite quotes is by St. Augustine – “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”. Amazing stories and lessons shared abroad, and a desire to help those less fortunate - like her Filipino relatives, sex workers assisted in Indonesia, and the malnourished refugees and Turkana people befriended while working for UNHCR in Kenya– have strengthened her desire to pursue development issues both in Australia and internationally.
Work
Elizabeth is passionate about the environment and public health issues. From 2008-2010 Elizabeth was an Assistant Director with the Australian Government working on energy efficiency and climate change policy. She is committed to reducing Australia’s carbon footprint and helping Australians live more environmentally sustainable lives.
From 2007 to 2008, Elizabeth was employed as an Environmental Health Officer for the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO). Elizabeth was involved in three Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Joint Programmes: a USD$19 million Climate Change Partnership Framework, a USD$5.8 million Governance for Water and Sanitation in China, and a USD$7.6 million Migrants and Youth Unemployment Programme. She also involved in the first ever drink and drive campaign launched in China (see link on right) and co-authored an Environment and Health Concept Note for the UN Theme Group on Energy Environment. See links to the English and Chinese reports to the right.
Elizabeth has worked in a research and policy capacity for the University of South Australia, Adelaide University and for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group Secretariat, where she worked on energy security and environmental sustainability issues in the APEC region. Elizabeth’s passion and interest in developmental issues has been catalysed through overseas experience working as a research officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya on the Sudanese border, and as a volunteer program officer for a HIV/AIDS NGO in Indonesia where she worked with sex workers and street children. Elizabeth completed her Honours Degree (with a First Class Honours) at UniSA and her thesis was published in the Australian Competition and Consumer Law Journal in 2006.
